Welcome to Solihull Sixth
Form College...arbeit macht frei.
Solihull Sixth Form College recently banned students from using web based e-mail from college. This measure, instituted by Dr. Jennie Longhurst, is causing considerable inconvenience to SSFC staff and students without any appreciable benefits.
Student Annoyance
Students wishing to use e-mail are expected to get a note from their subject tutor, explaining how the e-mail is relevant to the course, causing extra work for the student, the tutor and the IT staff. Why? The college has admitted there is no financial reason not to allow e-mail usage. In her campaign to clamp down on slackers, Jennie Longhurst has overlooked the fact that e-mail is one of the most direct ways to learn about the internet and computers in general.
What They Offer
- A blanket ban on many of the most popular web space providers, including Geocities, regardless of individual page content.
- A ban on any politically suspect material, meaning that History and Philosophy students are unable to research fascism and anarchy.
- A netnanny program that censors sites almost at random and turns every other link into a 403 error.
- A shared drive which is formatted without warning, leading to loss of saved work.
- A ban on chatrooms of any kind regardless of whether it is demonstratably educational.
- A ban on downloads or uploads of any kind. Even educational ones, downloaded straight onto a floppy.
- A total ban on all of usenet.
- A permanent ban on using the IT equipment for any student breaking these rules.
